How to send photos to someone in prison
The short answer
You can send family photos by post, through Email a Prisoner at participating prisons or through Purple Post at HMP Parc, HMP Five Wells and HMP Rye Hill. Check the prison's rules first, because not all photos are allowed.
Check what is allowed first
- Photos of family members are generally fine.
- Some prisons do not allow prisoners to receive photographs of themselves.
- Explicit or pornographic photos are not allowed.
- Certain prisoners may not be allowed photographs of children.
If you're not sure, ask the prison's family services team.
Your options
- By post. Put printed photos in with a letter, with the prisoner number on the envelope. Most post is checked by staff.
- Email a Prisoner. 32p per photo, up to 4 per message, at participating prisons.
- Purple Post. Up to 3 photos included with each message, at HMP Parc, HMP Five Wells and HMP Rye Hill. Photos need to be JPG or PNG, up to 5MB each.
Photos through Purple Post
- Download the app and add the person using their prisoner number.
- Write your message and choose up to 3 photos.
- Check them carefully, because a message can't be changed once it is sent.
- Send it. Photos go through automated checks, and may also be checked by prison staff.
At HMP Parc and HMP Five Wells, photos appear on in-cell tablets. At HMP Rye Hill, they are printed and delivered with the post.
